Welcome to motherhood! I’m so looking forward to being with you during this amazing journey. As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) my role is to help mommies feel most comfortable about their incredible gift to nurse their babies. Here’s what you can expect from a lactation visit. You can receive lactation support at Pure Milk Mom in three ways; in-home visit, virtual consultation and/or phone consultation. I’d highly recommend a prenatal consultation to discuss your feelings regarding breastfeeding and to provide anticipatory guidance regarding nursing after delivery. This way you can feel most prepared to begin nursing once your little bundle of joy enters the world. Some mothers request a lactation visit immediately after delivery in the hospital, birth center, or at home typically within the first few hours after birth to assess how baby latches to the breast, if there is effective milk transfer, and that mother is comfortable. No consultation will be exactly the same; each visit is designed to meet you and your baby’s needs to ensure a healthy feeding relationship. You can expect to discuss your pregnancy and birth experience, your personal hopes for breastfeeding, medical history, and any challenges you may have encountered. An in-home visit will include an observation of a feed. Please try and avoid feeding your little one immediately prior to a visit. You will be provided the tools for you to feel confident in your abilities to nurse your baby effectively.
Common topics: • Benefits & myths of breastfeeding • Position • Latch • Milk supply • Breast and nipple concerns and/or questions • Expression of breast milk and pumping • Nutrition during breastfeeding
How is an IBCLC trained?
The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) is the governing body of IBCLCs who monitors the certification and credentialing of the profession. To receive the IBCLC credential a candidate must be trained in health science, human lactation and breastfeeding and have experience in clinical practice providing breastfeeding support to clients. While some will claim to be lactation consultants, it’s best to seek a professional with the IBCLC credential in order to ensure you and your infant are receiving quality, evidence-based care from a professional in lactation support.
As an added benefit, I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. As a nutrition professional I can assist you with proper nutrition during pregnancy, the postpartum period, and breastfeeding. In addition, I can help you heighten nutrition for your family by focusing on infant nutrition and nutrition for adolescents. Please inquire about nutrition services.
